Vulkollan

Vulkollan® – “The king of urethanes”

Vulkollan® is one of the highest-performing elastomers on the market. Its exceptionally strong properties continuously solve new challenges and provide the user with optimisation and cost reduction. UW-ELAST AB has held a licence for many years to manufacture Vulkollan® from Covestro.

Today, we supply Vulkollan® grades in hardnesses ranging from 60 Shore A to 95 Shore A.

Manufacturing process for Vulkollan®

The material is a cross-linked elastomer consisting of polyols (ester) and diisocyanates (NDI – naphthalene diisocyanate), and manufacturing is carried out in several stages through chemical reactions. The manufacturing process is very precise and time-consuming. After thorough mixing of the constituent components according to an established formulation, the material is cast into preheated moulds. Depending on material thickness, the post-curing process requires a total curing time of several weeks at room temperature (at least 25°C), with intermediate post-curing at 110°C. If the manufactured parts are not given the recommended post-curing time, quality is adversely affected. Normally, the delivery time should be between 4 and 6 weeks.

Material properties of Vulkollan®

Vulkollan® has a range of outstanding properties. Its mechanical and dynamic properties are particularly prominent and often meet the requirements of the most demanding applications. A very strong feature is its dynamic performance as a wheel material—high load capacity and high speeds.

We use Vulkollan® coating on high-performance wheels for, for example, mills, free-fall mixers, forklift wheels, wheels for roller coasters, etc. Other suitable applications include, for example, damping elements, scrapers, ploughshares, etc.

Vulkollan – key properties:

  • Withstands high dynamic loads
  • High tear resistance
  • Good resistance to UV radiation, ozone, greases and oils
  • Low temperature dependence
  • High wear resistance
  • Low permanent deformation
  • High rebound resilience
